Roman sites

This is a travel guide to Roman archaeological sites, not a database of them. We start with Slovenia and will expand along the Adriatic into Istria and Dalmatia. The aim is to help you decide whether a place is worth the detour, and then to get you there: each entry says what actually survives above ground, how the site is accessed, and what to know before you set off.

We give more room to lesser-known places than to the famous ones. A ruined fort on a plateau with no signposts can be a better afternoon than a museum you will find in any guidebook, but only if someone tells you where the path starts.

“Roman” here covers a long stretch of time. In what is now Slovenia, the Romans conquered the region in the 1st century BC, and the area was then split between the Italian region of Venetia et Histria and the provinces of Pannonia and Noricum. The main route from the Pannonian plain to Italy ran through this territory, which is why so much of what remains is roads, way-stations, and the forts that watched over them. Entries run from that conquest to the end of Roman life in late antiquity.

Every entry lists its sources, and every factual claim in the text can be traced to one of them. Where a date or an attribution is disputed, the text says so rather than picking a side quietly. Coordinates are given for every site; for a small number of vulnerable places they are deliberately rounded, and the entry explains why.
